DRIVING DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION: HOW A GLOBAL CAR RENTAL LEADER LEVERAGED API INTEGRATION FOR SCALABLE GROWTH

ORGANIZATION

XTIVIA’s client is a global leader in car rentals, operating over 10,800 corporate and licensed locations across 145 countries, including North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, Australia, Africa, the Middle East, and New Zealand. As the largest car rental company globally, they boast more than 1,700 airport locations in the U.S. and over 1,300 locations internationally. Additionally, the company owns a prominent vehicle leasing and fleet management arm, expanding its influence in the transportation sector.

CHALLENGE

In alignment with a comprehensive technology transformation strategy, the client recognized the urgent need to modernize their sprawling IT landscape. Legacy systems and outdated integration methods created significant barriers to agility and scalability. Managing over 1,800 diverse applications with traditional integration techniques, such as point-to-point connections, was causing bottlenecks that hindered the company’s ability to innovate, roll out new features, and meet the fast-paced demands of its competitive market. These limitations stifled business growth, preventing the company from adapting to new opportunities in a digital-first world.

“As part of a transformative initiative, we sought a technology partner with deep expertise in modernizing complex IT ecosystems. XTIVIA not only understood our challenges but also demonstrated the capacity to design and implement a robust solution. As a result, we were able to integrate hundreds of mission-critical applications in record time.”

TECHNICAL SOLUTION

Strategic Integration and Scalable Microservices Architecture
XTIVIA was engaged to design a forward-looking Integration Strategy and Reference Architecture, facilitating the transition to a more agile and scalable cloud-native environment. The integration framework covered a range of platforms, including on-premises systems, multi-cloud ecosystems (Azure, AWS, Bluemix), and B2B partner interactions.

By leveraging MuleSoft’s robust three-layer API Architecture (System API, Process API, and Experience/Resource API), XTIVIA orchestrated a modular, loose coupling of microservices designed for flexibility, scalability, and security. This modernized integration approach empowered the company to connect disparate business systems and seamlessly integrate them with cloud-based applications. System APIs were crucial in exposing legacy systems as granular, reusable services that could be dynamically orchestrated to power new business processes and use cases.

Additionally, XTIVIA worked closely with the client to develop an Enterprise Monitoring & Management framework, ensuring that the solution could be proactively monitored and optimized. By selecting and integrating the right monitoring tools, including Splunk, the team provided end-to-end visibility of transaction flows, enabling the client to pinpoint failures and swiftly address root causes. A custom transaction monitoring dashboard was delivered to ensure real-time visibility for production support teams.

BUSINESS RESULT

With the Enterprise API Strategy in place, the client was able to accelerate its go-to-market initiatives, offering new products and services to customers faster than ever. The seamless integration of applications reduced operational overhead related to manual updates, enabling teams to focus on innovation and business growth. By eliminating legacy silos and reducing dependency on outdated integration methods, the company not only improved efficiency but also enhanced scalability to support future growth and expansion.

Moreover, this strategic move allowed the client to reallocate resources and optimize costs by eliminating redundant applications and consolidating their IT infrastructure into a more cohesive, cloud-enabled ecosystem. This transformation helped the company enhance customer engagement, optimize resource utilization, and significantly reduce the operational costs previously associated with managing a fragmented application portfolio.

By the Numbers:

  • 700+ applications successfully integrated to date
